Disclaimer:YOU do YOU!But the pressure put on people to undergo surgery is not healthy. No judgement otherwise.
Over the last few decades Korea has become a major economy on the world stage.Their industries have become global including Kpop. Now you probably knew that already.
But a side effect of that is the immense competition between workers to get a well paying job.To do that. You go through an interview with the employer. But to be considered for one your CV(your personal record of what you can do and where you have worked) needs to be approved. That includes a photo.
There are stories of schools and companies setting aside piles of possible candidates for a myriad of things such as grades but looks are a factor as well.
The prettier you look on that picture the better your chance of a good job.And because not everyone can claim that title naturally people resort to plastic surgery.
Plastic surgery is everywhere.Advertised on all sorts of places from billboard to the metro.Ads upon ads for beauty clinics abound. And while efforts to ban the advertisements have begun. The desire for such surgery hasn't gone away.
A not so uncommon thing you can hear is plastic surgery being given as a graduation or birthday present.Parents and kids justify it as a way to ensure the child's success. It has been boiled down to getting a haircut.
But what do people get?Well in fear of advertising it even more here are some examples:
V-line jaw surgery |
Double eyelid surgery (adding a crease in the eyelid) |
These are among the most popular and are part of modern day Korean beauty standards.Which come from Korean Idols.Because people have their view of pretty formed by idols and in turn idols stick to what people think is pretty it has become this ridiculous circle of self fulfillment. In an industry with so much competition you wont debut unless you are pretty.A company wont want to take that chance. And no visual will look anything but this type of way.Making it even more solidified in future groups and kids that THIS is how you should look.
That is why when this became abundant to a point where a group was formed almost entirely of pretty visuals and not much else. The international community went off.(Ugh TWICE)
And when Koreans went and harassed Umji of Gfriend for her looks they also got told off.
This disconnect between the two main fan bases.continues putting groups and their companies forever between a rock and a hard place.
